Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ducking a rifle butt attack by a Sri Lankan naval rating during an honour guard in Colombo 30 July 1987 after the visiting Indian leader signed a controversial peace pact with the Colombo government. Security has been tightened in Sri Lanka amid fears of attacks during July, regarded as the most violent period in the country. Twenty one years ago today the country lost Rajiv Gandhi, the youngest person to have occupied the office of the prime minister. Rajiv Gandhi was assvssinated by a Tamil militant suicide bomber at Siriperambudur in Tamil Nadu where he had gone to address an election meeting. In Rajiv Gandhi’s death, the country lost a leader who had ushered India into the twenty-first century, having authored the technological revolution, which has placed India ahead in the world. I had the privilege of working as the principal information officer of the government of India when Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister.
